Iris Lintern Byrne, 94, of Norfolk, Virginia passed away on October 29, 2021 surrounded by her family at her home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Bryne Miles, granddaughters, Kelley and Kathleen Miles and great grandson, Gibson Miles Summerell.
Iris is predeceased in death by her husband of 40 years, Lieutenant Commander / Captain Joseph L. Bryne and their children, Charles and Richard Blair and Michael and Patricia Anne Bryne. She is also predeceased by her grandsons, Mark Miles and Charles “Chucky” Blair.
Iris grew up in the countryside of Hampshire, England in the village of Grateley. She was the youngest of nine children to Alfred Earnest Lintern and Annie Beatrice Lintern. Iris moved to the United States when she was 19 years old and began her life in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where she met and married her husband, Joseph Bryne. Iris raised her 5 children in Norfolk and contributed to the community in many ways. She participated in Meals on Wheels for over 15 years and volunteered at Norfolk General Hospital visiting with the elderly. She also volunteered her time to the elderly in the neighborhood of Riverview – sitting with them and keeping them company for the over 50 years she lived in the neighborhood. Iris will be greatly missed by her surviving family and all that had the pleasure to know her.
Services will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
