October 18, 1930 – April 28, 2020
SOUTHERN SHORES — Jack Roger Miller, 89, of Southern Shores, NC, passed away April 28 following a recent cancer diagnosis.
He was born October 18, 1930 in Elkhart, IN to the late Earl and Carmen (Olmstead) Miller. He was preceded in death by his wife Rita in 2011, brother Jim in 2018 and sister Patty in 2020. Jack graduated from John Bartram High School in south Philadelphia in 1948 and married Rita Rose DeFelice in 1958.
Jack enjoyed a 35-year career as a naval architect, starting in Groton, CT for the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics then moving to Portsmouth, VA where he spent most of his career at a private marine engineering company. Jack loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener throughout his life. He parlayed an exceptional artistic talent into duck carving for both fun and competitive showings. Jack’s mechanical prowess was always in demand as he could fix just about anything that needed fixing. When the Duke Blue Devils were playing basketball, all other hobbies were set aside.
As his family grew through the years, his greatest joy was being close to them.Jack is survived by his loving son and daughter, Tim Miller (Kathy) of Richmond, VA and Mary Miller Hartz (Jim) of Virginia Beach, VA; granddaughters Lauren Miller Bischoff (William), Ashley Miller (fiancé Blair Williams) and Taylor Miller, and great granddaughter Lucy Bischoff, all of Richmond, VA. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeff Forman as well as the incredible staff of Bay Lake Retirement and Assisted Living in Virginia Beach for their compassionate care.
