May 16, 1948 – November 16, 2023
NAGS HEAD — James L. Byrd, Jr., known as Jimmy, passed away from this life on November 16, 2023, at the age of 75.
Jimmy was well known in the community of Dare. His parents moved here when Jimmy was 16, and he never left, this was his home. Jimmy was known to everyone as a dedicated and hard worker. He started out at a young age delivering Newspapers on his bicycle, and at his time of death he was working for the NCDOT-Ferry Division as an Administrative Associate. Jimmy graduated from Manteo High School and played football during his years in High School. He always maintained a love for the sport and enjoyed a good game on television. Jimmy had a season of his life that he played golf. When he wasn’t working, he was on the golf course hitting a few balls. His favorite pastime for many years was his love of the camp that he and his friends shared. It was there that he and friends spent many hours with their families relaxing, enjoying their favorite hobbies; hunting, fishing, and other activities. During those years relationships were established that are still firm and true today. Jimmy was a very dedicated and committed person to those he loved.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; James L. Byrd, Sr. and Marie C. Herr. He is survived by his wife, Margaret B. Byrd (Peggy), his son, Patrick Byrd, and his granddaughter, Sydney Byrd, and three sisters; Linda Daniels, Renee’ Griffin, and Sheri Hanson.
In honor of Jimmy a celebration of life will take place July 2024 at his most loved area, the camp. Further details will be provided to the family and friends as the time of his celebration draws near.
Jimmy, you will be deeply missed. Hearts are shattered in a million pieces, but that smile, those dimples, and the stories of your life will bring joy to each of us in the midst of our pain.
