OCRACOKE — Janice Sue Crawford O’Neal, 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at ECU Health Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on June 13, 1948, in Oklahoma, Sue was the cherished daughter of the late Jack and Betty Crawford. She was a devoted wife to Walton L. O’Neal and a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her gentle spirit and kind heart touched the lives of all who knew her.
Sue’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her husband, Walton; her son, Carl O’Neal, and his wife, Serina; and her treasured grandchildren, Mackenzie O’Neal, Chandler O’Neal, and Jack Birge. She also leaves behind her adored great-granddaughter, Paisyn Birge. Additionally, Sue is survived by her brother, Robert Crawford, and his wife, Penny, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her two sons, Jack Birge and Walton L. O’Neal Jr., and her brother, John Crawford.
To know Sue was to know the immense love and pride she had for her grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to share a photo or a story about them—whether at the store, the post office, or even in passing on the road. Her unwavering love and devotion will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to those who knew her best.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather for fellowship at the Rec Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ocracoke Health Center or Ocracoke Community Park in Sue’s memory.
