SOUTHERN SHORES — Kevin James McGrath, 82, passed away peacefully in Nags Head, NC, surrounded by his loving family on November 27, 2023. Kevin was born May 18, 1941, in New York, NY, to the late David and Ellen McGrath. He was also predeceased by four siblings, Paul, Owen, Anita, and Bernadette.
Kevin graduated from Seton Hall Catholic High School in 1958. Following high school, Kevin proudly served the United States of America in the Navy during the Vietnam War as a Chief Hospital Corpman. He loved his country dearly and retired from the Navy, in 1978, after 20 years of dedicated service. Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from St. Leo College now (St. Leo University) in Hampton, VA. His educational credentials led to employment with Dominion Power where he would later retire as a successful marketing representative.
Kevin was also passionate about his work as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Faithful Navigator in the K.O.C. Assembly 2588 in Virginia Beach, VA. In 1999, Kevin and his family moved to the Outer Banks, of NC, and joined Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church. Here, he continued actively serving the Knights of Columbus as the Grand Knight, Council 8759 and as the Faithful Navigator, Assembly 2989, both Chapters in the Outer Banks. An honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Kevin devoted a total of 60 years to the organization. Kevin’s other passion- golf, led to a long membership with Duck Woods Country Club where he spent countless days enjoying the course with his golf buddies.
Kevin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucille; his sons, Sean McGrath and Christopher McGrath all of Southern Shores, NC; his siblings David McGrath (Dee) of Bellport, NY; Michael McGrath (Alice) of Sag Harbor, NY; Roger McGrath, and Robert McGrath both of Babylon, NY; as well as his cousins, nieces and nephews.
Kevin’s memorial mass with military honors will be held Thursday December 7, 2023, at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church at 11:00 am. In lieu of Flowers, memorial donations can be made to the LAMB Foundation of NC, Inc, 6420-A1 Rea Road, Suite 312, Charlotte, NC 28277. Checks should be earmarked on the memo line to Council 8759. Father John Hanley will officiate.
