SOUTHERN SHORES — Retired Master Sergeant William David Boxmeyer, Jr. of Southern Shores, NC, passed away after a short illness on November 20, 2023, at the age of 61. Born on September 8, 1962, in Ridgewood, NJ, David made an enduring impact on the lives of those he knew and loved. He had an unwavering dedication to his country and a steadfast love for his family.
David was greatly loved by his parents Maribeth and Peter Pragid, Southern Shores, NC, his father, W. David Boxmeyer, Sr. (Connie) Brunswick, GA, his step-mother, Fran Raynes (Jeff) Buzzard’s Bay, MA, loving sisters, Barbara Williams (Michael) Southern Shores, NC and Darragh Naylor (Jamie) Cincinnati, OH, and his brother, David M. Boxmeyer (Kate) Medfield, MA. David was preceded in death by his brother, James Boxmeyer. He will be remembered fondly by his nieces and nephews: John-Michael and Alex Williams, William and JP Naylor, and William, Abigail, and Owen Boxmeyer.
A 1980 graduate of Butler, NJ High School, he was a phenomenal varsity epee fencer and four-time NJ State Epee Champion. He medaled at the 1980 AFLA Junior Olympics in Portland and represented his country on the US Junior Olympic World Team in Venice, Italy. He was awarded a full four-year scholarship to Clemson University to fence.
David proudly served his country faithfully for 23 years, first in the US Navy (The Navy “E” Ribbon and the Sea Service Deployment Medal with service star) as a USN Sea Air Search and Rescue Diver in the Mediterranean.
His US Army overseas service included taking the first MP battalion into Bosnia as part of Operation Joint Endeavor (NATO Medal, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with service star).
David served in the US Air Force Reserves at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, serving in theater of operations supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom (Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal (ARMS) with three bronze oak leaf clusters). Rising through the ranks, he ultimately retired as a Master Sergeant, leaving a distinguished legacy of service behind.
He continued his government service with the Office of Homeland Security (911 Joint Terrorism Task Force NYC) as a US Air Marshal and later as a Special Agent with HUD.
The life of David will be celebrated in a memorial service on April 5, 2025, at the Southern Shores Cemetery in Southern Shores, NC.
