KILL DEVIL HILLS — Roland Heinrich Bläsi, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, a culinary artist whose love for cooking took him across continents, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on August 27, 1946, in Bamberg, Germany, Roland found his passion early in life and dedicated himself to mastering the art of cuisine.
Roland’s journey began with his studies at a trade school specializing in cooking, followed by a formative chef apprenticeship at the prestigious Bamberger Hof in his hometown. His talents soon led him to illustrious kitchens around the world. In Stockholm, he delighted guests at The Operakallaren. His career continued to flourish at the Summit Hotel in Sydney and the Fairmont Hotel and Squire Room in San Francisco. Roland’s culinary adventures also took him to New Zealand, Panama, and Brazil, enriching his repertoire and delighting those fortunate enough to experience his creations.
In addition to working in renowned establishments, Roland fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening his own restaurant, aptly named Rolands, where he shared his passion for food and hospitality with his community.
Roland’s life was marked by a spirit of adventure, fueled by his love for travel and cooking. He embraced every opportunity to explore new flavors and cultures, bringing joy to countless people along the way.
He spent his retirement years on the Outer Banks to be near family. You could often catch sight of him walking Bay Drive or happily sharing a vodka tonic and telling stories to friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Elisabeth and Heinrich Bläsi; and his brothers, Reinhard and Werner Bläsi.
Roland leaves behind a loving family, including his siblings Renate Mackenzie, Carmen Fournia, Gerda Norman, and Christel Fischer; and a special niece, Christina Mackenzie of Kitty Hawk, who provided devoted care during his final months. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Sybille Mackenzie, Thomas Keolker, Stephanie DeVault, Tatijana Fischer, Christian Fournia, Sean Fournia, Alexander Blasi, and Susanne Blasi; and many more great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2025 to honor Roland’s remarkable journey and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those who knew him. His memory will continue to inspire those who shared his love for good food and the joys of life.
