KILL DEVIL HILLS — On Thursday, November 21, 2019, Sara Rebecca York, nee Leedy, loving wife, mother of three, and grandmother of five, passed away at the age of 81. Sara was born on April 15, 1938, to Grace Leedy in Kingsport, Tennessee. She attended Kettering High school and received a degree from Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC. At 23 she met and married William York, also of Kingsport. She and her family lived in Dale City, VA for 33 years before moving to Kill Devil Hills, NC.
Singing and music were her passion and she was an active member of Outer Banks Baptist Church, where faithfully she sang in the choir for many years. She was also an avid bowler and was a long-time member of the bowling league at the OBX Bowling Center. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and played a mean game of mini-golf. Sara was a loving and giving individual and always served her family, her church and her community. Sara was a beautiful woman with a sparkling smile that could light up a room. She was a bright soul who will be greatly missed.
Sara is preceded in death by her mother, Grace Leedy, and her brothers, Duane and Fred. She is survived by her husband William York; her children, Mary (Mendi) Benigni, Mike York, and Meredith (Meri) York; and her grandchildren, Alex Brown, Manni Garcia, Grace Benigni, Nicole York and Alyssa York.
The funeral service and committal will be held at 11 am at Outer Banks Baptist Church (216 W. First Street Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948) on November 25, 2019. Friends and family may view one hour prior. Interment will be private.
