BUXTON — Wayland Ward Jennette, age 79, of Buxton, North Carolina, passed away on September 14, 2023. He was born in Washington, NC, on March 8, 1944, to the late Juanita Peele and Clarence Baxter Jennette. Wayland was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Clarence Baxter Jennette, Jr., and Leo Miller Jennette.
Wayland had a fulfilling life with notable accomplishments and cherished memories. After graduating from Frederick Military Academy, he went on to attend Chowan College. Wayland served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard before embarking on a successful career. For 17 years, he dedicated his skills and expertise as an NCDOT-Ferry Division Captain. Additionally, Wayland owned and operated Cape Hatteras Carpet, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
Outside of his professional life, Wayland pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He loved classic cars. He was an avid fisherman and actively participated in Hatteras Island fishing tournaments. His dedication to the sport brought him much joy and fulfillment.
Wayland was a devoted member of Lighthouse Assembly of God and Little Grove United Methodist Church. His faith played an important role in his life, providing comfort and guidance throughout his journey.
Wayland is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Delores “Dee” Jennette; his son, Wayland W. Jennette, Jr. (Cena); and his cherished grandchildren, Audrey and Curren. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Good (George), along with her children Michelle (Kayla) and Tiffany. Wayland leaves behind his nephew Leo Jennette (Heather) and niece Suzanne Jennette, as well as several other great-nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him.
A funeral service to honor Wayland’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Lighthouse Assembly of God with Pastor Rob Davis and Rev. Toni Wood officiating. Prior to the service, a viewing will be provided for one hour. Wayland will be laid to rest in a private burial ceremony in the Jennette family cemetery. A reception will be held at the church following the funeral service.

Wayland Ward Jennette will forever be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, country, and community. His kindness, wisdom, and strength will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
