Virginia man dies in water-related incident at south end of Hatteras Island

A 46-year-old male from Falls Church, Virginia died in an apparent drowning at the south end of Hatteras Island on Friday evening.

At 9:34 p.m. on May 28, a Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) visitor reported finding a body floating in ocean water at the end of Pole Road, located at the south end of Hatteras Island.

Two Seashore Rangers, Dare County Emergency Medical Services and Hatteras Island Rescue Squad responded to the incident.

Family members of the Virginia man stated that he was surf fishing prior to the water-related incident. Ocean conditions in the area were reported to be rough.
