Ferry Division delays summer schedule on Ocracoke-Swan Quarter route
The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division is extending the current spring schedule at its Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route through June 13.
This route was slated to go to its summer schedule of four departures from both sides daily on May 24. However, due to extensive repairs being made to the Motor Vessel Pamlico, the Pamlico Sound routes will continue to run a three-boat schedule until the ferry, built in 1965, undergoes all repairs needed and is inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Swan Quarter Ocracoke route will continue as follows:
Departing Swan Quarter at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Departing Ocracoke at 6:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
The Cedar Island-Ocracoke schedule will continue with six departures from each side with only one minor time change to a departure from Cedar Island. Effective May 24, the 12:30 p.m. departure time will move to 1 p.m.
NCDOT awarded contracts to build two new sound class vessels to serve this route to Orange Shipbuilding Co. The new ferries are currently under construction and are expected to be delivered later this year and in 2012.
