The annual 2022 Hatteras Village Golf Cart Parade was another big success, according to parade organizers, with approximately 50 entries and a total of 53 carts, (including the “pace cart”), attending the July 4 event.
“Catching a Buzz” was the winner of the Most Creative category. The cart was decked out as a boat, with beverage cans hanging from the rigging, and a catchy horn that thrilled the crowd. For the Most Patriotic category, the judges chose “Famous Americans,” which included Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Bob Ross among others, while Most Humorous went to the Hatteras Island Ocean Center for their take on sea turtles.
The yearly event began in 2013 as a fundraiser for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation and attracted less than a dozen carts that were decked out in patriotic themes. Once it became clear that the parade garnered interest among locals and visitors alike, the event became an annual celebration, with more and more folks participating in decked-out golf carts of all varieties.
The parade began at Teach’s Lair Marina and cruised through the village, delighting a long line of spectators. A popular village cookout followed the event at the Community Building, with supplies running out after more than 450 people were served.
