A slow-moving coastal low dumped a record amount of rainfall on the Outer Banks and northeastern North Carolina on Monday, with more rain possible the rest of the week from additional weather systems.
The National Weather Service said 3.13 inches of rain had been recorded at Cape Hatteras as of 5:30 p.m. on Monday, breaking the previous mark for March 4 of 2.47 inches set in 2016.
Additional rainfall was recorded at the automated weather station at Billy Mitchell Field in Frisco, with a revised total of 3.75 inches reported as of midnight.
There have been reports of standing rainwater in low spots where the heaviest rains have fallen on Monday.
An unsettled pattern is forecast to persist across eastern North Carolina through the week, starting Tuesday night, as several disturbances impact the area bringing multiple rounds of rain.
