Excessive heat continues Monday, High risk of rip currents for southern Hatteras Island, Ocracoke
Monday, July 3, is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
Temperatures well into the 80s combined with a very humid air mass will produce widespread heat indices above 100 degrees on Monday afternoon. The intense heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
A heat advisory is in effect for all of eastern North Carlina, including the Outer Banks, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday.
A high risk of rip currents is also in effect for Hatteras Island beaches from Cape Hatteras to Hatteras village, as well as Ocracoke Island beaches. A moderate risk of rip currents is forecast for Buxton through the northern Outer Banks.
Lifeguarded beaches are available along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore at the following locations:
- Coquina Beach Access (Bodie Island)
- Located across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse
- Rodanthe Beach Access (Hatteras Island)
- 23731 N.C. Highway 12, Rodanthe
- Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Beach Access (Hatteras Island)
- Adjacent to the old Cape Hatteras Lighthouse site
- Frisco Beach Access (Hatteras Island)
- Located just south of Frisco Village
- Ocracoke Beach Access (Ocracoke Island)
- 5 miles south of the Ocracoke Campground
The public should check surf and swimming conditions before heading to the beach, and the daily beach forecast at www.weather.gov/beach/mhx includes rip current risk levels, and information about other hazards along the beach. In addition, visitors are encouraged to sign up for text alerts from Dare County, ocean rescue agencies, and the National Weather Service by texting “OBXBeachConditions” to 77295.
