Highway 12 will be closed north of Rodanthe overnight; Ocean overwash reported in Buxton
As of 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, N.C. Highway 12 remained closed between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe. Ocean overwash was reported on Wednesday afternoon in northern Buxton, and minor soundside flooding was reported in Frisco and Hatteras village.
Per the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), although crews made progress on some areas of N.C. Highway 12 this morning, the new high tide cycle has produced more ocean overwash and a 60-80 ft. breach in the dune at Mirlo Beach. Because of that, N.C. 12 will remain CLOSED between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe throughout the day today and overnight tonight.
NCDOT will continue to post updates on their social media pages at https://www.facebook.com/NCDOTNC12 and https://twitter.com/NCDOT_NC12, as well as on their travel information website at https://tims.ncdot.gov/tims/RegionSummary.aspx?co=28.
The coastal flood threat is still ongoing for the Outer Banks throughout Wednesday, per the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office. High surf, beach erosion, and ocean overwash are all possible throughout the day, particularly before and after high tide.
High tide is at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
Wind gusts of 50 mph or more were reported in some locations, and will slowly diminish through the afternoon.
