The National Weather Service is predicting warmer-than-average temperatures and above-normal precipitation across eastern North Carolina this winter, thanks to El Nino conditions over the eastern Pacific.

“While an El Nino can give us a good hint at what may happen, week-to-week differences in the weather are still quite variable,” said Erik Heden, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Newport

“Just like we say during hurricane season, it only takes one storm,” Heden said. “Our winter may end up mild, but if we see one snow or ice event, we will remember it.”

In the video above, Heden goes into more details about the forecast, reviews resources such as snow forecasts and how you can view thresholds and worst-case scenarios, winter impact graphics, and finally how coastal storms such as Nor’easters can be as impactful as any hurricane.
