Scallop boat remains grounded between Oregon Inlet and Bodie Island
A vessel that was grounded near Oregon Inlet over the weekend remains stranded about 50 yards near the shoreline, per a recent update from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet.
Per the U.S. Coast Guard, the 72’ scallop boat encountered shallow waters close to the inlet on Saturday night, and contacted Sea Tow, which in turn alerted the U.S. Coast Guard early Sunday morning. The unit responded by establishing communications with the vessel to assess the situation, and the crew of the vessel was airlifted by Sunday afternoon as a safety precaution by a Coast Guard team from Air Station Elizabeth City.
The vessel is currently located roughly a half-mile south of ORV Ramp 4 on Bodie Island, and while it is grounded on the north side of the navigational channel and is not an obstruction, it is advised that all vessels transiting Oregon Inlet remain aware, and proceed with caution until the situation is resolved.
As of Thursday morning, there was no additional information on when the vessel would be removed by the owner.
I received this story from Newsbreak as “Local Breaking News”. I live in Oregon and during my 65 years here I’d never heard of “Oregon inlet” or “Bodie Island”. As it turns out, due to this grounded ships location near “Oregon Inlet”, Newsbreak posted the story as “Local Breaking News” here in beautiful Oregon.
