There will be a slight risk of severe thunderstorms developing across eastern North Carolina on Monday, June 24, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.

The highest risk of strong storms will be between 2-9 p.m., and the main threats will be damaging wind gusts of 60 mph or more, and the possibility of large hail. There is also a minor threat of isolated tornadoes, as well as heavy rains.

A high risk of rip currents is also in effect for all beaches south of Cape Hatteras, and a moderate risk of rip currents is in effect from Pea Island to Buxton.

The public should check surf and swimming conditions before heading to the beach, and the daily beach forecast at www.weather.gov/beach/mhx includes rip current risk levels, and information about other hazards along the shoreline. In addition, the public can visit Dare County’s Love The Beach, Respect The Ocean website for current risks and additional info about rip current safety.

For more information on the local forecast, visit www.weather.gov/mhx for weather information, or the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/NWSMoreheadCity/.
