Speed limits increase on N.C. Highway 12 for the off-season
With peak travel season on the Outer Banks coming to an end, N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) crews are changing speed limit signs along sections of N.C. Highway 12 to higher, off-season speed limits.
The speed limits in the Tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, as well as in Avon and Frisco, will return to 45 mph from the seasonal speed limit of 35 mph.
Off-season speed limits will also return to 55 mph in several areas of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, such as the stretch of roadway between Avon and Buxton, and between Frisco and Hatteras.
The speed limits on Hatteras Island are seasonally reduced by 10 mph in mid-May to adapt to the increase in summertime traffic. Traditionally, the speed limits increase on or around September 15 due to the reduced number of off-season visitors.
Summer speed limits will return around May 15, 2023.

Off season just ended, currently the On-season.
Any resident will agree with that..
Sure, sure. Breathe a sigh of relief. But I’d love to see everyone survive without the “off season.” What was it that Cpt Quint said about being on welfare all winter? I don’t care who you are. Without the tourons, no one is above water, especially on the island. As for the speed limits, I’m sure that the 15 seconds you save is so precious.
Tourons have no effect on me other than being an inconvenience. I never have needed any of their money. We are stuck with them and the speed limit should be 25mph in RWS and if not all certainly the stretch between the pier and Ocean Waves campground. Too many people crossing the street for 35mph.
If you’re making any kind of a living, a lot of that $$ is touron $$ even if it isn’t coming from them directly. It’s called indirect economic effect.
