A house fire was reported on McMullen Road in Avon Village early Wednesday afternoon, March 6.

The caller reported smoke and flames visible at 2:02 p.m., and members of the Avon Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) as well as Frisco VFD member Justin Bolden, who was in the area, were on the scene by 2:08 p.m. The Buxton VFD also arrived minutes after the initial call.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire, including the Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras VFDs, the Dare County EMS, and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office. Chicamacomico Banks VFD covered the Avon fire district while the fire was being fought.

“Within 15 minutes we had the fire pretty well [under control] but it took 45 minutes to knock it down,” said Avon VFD Chief Frank Hopkins. “I was very happy with the fast response. Without it, it could have been a different fire.”

The fire was extinguished by Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. but VFD members remained on the scene for hours to ensure the site was safe.

The house was occupied at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported, but the full-time residents were displaced and unable to return home. Social Services and the Red Cross were notified to help the victims of the fire.
