Avon– Velma Mae Williams Barnette, 93, formerly of Avon and Chesapeake,Va., died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 in Elizabeth City, N.C. Born in Avon,she was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Iantha O’Neal Williamsand the widow of Harold K. Barnette Sr. She retired as the U.S.Postmaster of Avon.
Mrs. Barnette is survived by a son, HaroldK. Barnette Jr. and wife, Ola, of Chesapeake, Va.; three sisters, RettaQuidley, Vera Meekins, and Gloria O’Neal, all of Avon; threegrandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Besides her husband andparents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and GeraldWilliams.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16,at 2 p.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church by the Revs. MauriceQuidley, Roger Dill and Bryan Gray. Burial will be in the QuidleyFamily Cemetery in Buxton. The family will receive friends andrelatives at the church on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m.
