Edward Clark Cruikshank, D.D.S., 74, of Hatteras Village, NC, passedaway unexpectedly on August 9, 2017. He was a devoted and lovinghusband to Carol, father to Sarah and Alex, and grandfather, brotherand friend.
Ed was born February 18, 1943 in Ivydale, West Virginia to John Curns(J.C.) and Rose Hamrick Cruikshank. He attended high school at theGreenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV, graduated from WestVirginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree, and received hisD.D.S. from WVU’s School of Dentistry.
Ed was a 42 year resident of Martinsburg, WV, where he built asuccessful dentistry practice. He was a longtime member of the WestVirginia Dental Association, and at one point he was an adjunctprofessor at the Georgetown University School of Dentistry. Nineyears ago, he retired with his beloved Carol to Hatteras, NorthCarolina, where he had long spent good fishing years.
Ed grew up hunting and fishing in Ivydale and surrounding areas. Hecontinued to hunt until his mid thirties — including several trips outwest. He fished throughout his life, preferring the salt waters of theAtlantic in increasingly larger sport fishing boats. He was an activemember of the Hatteras Marlin Club, and participated in many billfishtournaments with friends.
Ed was also an avid skier. He taught his kids to ski at SnowshoeMountain in WV. He was a 40 year visitor to Vail, Colorado, where – inretirement – he enjoyed extended ski trips. He was also a tirelessreader, with a passion for knowledge.
Ed is survived by his sister, Doris Cruikshank Bauer, of West PalmBeach, FL; by his brother, John (Jay) Curns Cruikshank Jr., of NorthPalm Beach, FL; by his brother, Telford Cruikshank, of Lake Okeechobee,FL; by his daughter, Sarah Cruikshank Ockman, and son-in-law HowardOckman, of Nairobi, Kenya; by his son, Alex M. Cruikshank, of Sarasota,FL; and by his four wonderful grandchildren, Caleb Ockman, AnabelOckman, Reuben Ockman and Jack Cruikshank. He was predeceased by hisloving wife of 46 years, Carol Cole Cruikshank, who passed away on May12, 2013.
The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 21,2017 at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Martinsburg, WV, where his asheswill be placed in the columbarium, with the Rev.
