National Seashore Rangers Collect Beach Debris from Cape Point to Frisco

On Thursday morning, January 30, Cape Hatteras National Seashore law enforcement rangers collected a variety of beach debris, including old tires, lumber, decking material, and electrical wiring, during a patrol of the shoreline from Cape Point in Buxton to Ramp 49 in Frisco.

While the debris was not from a single recent incident, the Cape Hatters National Seashore (CHNS) noted in a social media post that beach visitors should be aware that hazardous debris does wash ashore, especially during and after storms, which can cause a safety issue.

“It should be noted in upper case letters that the local community and visitors do an amazing job cleaning the beach on a daily basis, and we are very thankful for the support,” stated CHNS in an online update.

Both the CHNS and local organizations, like the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association (NCBBA), conduct regular beach clean-ups throughout the year alongside volunteers. The NCBBA, CHNS, and Outer Banks Preservation Association (OBPA) are also responsible for the “Pack it In, Pack it Out” campaign, which was launched in 2017, and which encourages beach-goers to bring back any trash that they take to the beach.
