Cape Hatteras National Seashore campgrounds, restrooms should be open by Memorial Day
Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent David Hallac on Thursday said the park service hopes to have seashore campgrounds and restrooms open by Memorial Day weekend.
The news came as U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt stopped by Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and Cape Hatteras on Thursday in a tour of national parks and public lands working to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic.
“My family loves the Outer Banks,” Bernhardt told reporters, noting the last time he was in the area was for vacation on Hatteras in the summer of 2016.
Bernhardt and his staff toured Cape Hatteras beaches and the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center before a stop at the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Afterward, they planned to meet with seashore staff to discuss safety and any other concerns.
With visitor restrictions lifting for the Outer Banks on May 16, Hallac said the park service will have the seashore’s four lifeguarded beaches fully staffed, and is working to reopen campgrounds and restrooms by Memorial Day. He’s not yet sure when the lighthouses will reopen for climbs, but the grounds are open at Cape Hatteras, Bodie Island and Ocracoke lighthouses.
Bernhardt said his agency has worked with National Park Service to keep as much access as possible open during the pandemic while making the health of employees and visitors a top priority.
“The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers and partners continues to be paramount,” Bernhardt said.
David Bernhardt is lying scum. His scandals are too numerous to even count. He’s worked as a mining lobbyist for decades trying to overturn the Endangered Species Act. I wouldn’t want him within a thousand miles of my state.
The endangered species act is abused by lawyers in criminal acts, those acts were lobbied and the laws changed to allow the act to be used against any federal entity, for species that are not endangered. The act is a farce
