Hatteras Island Meals’ Annual Raffle returns for 2021 with some of its biggest prize packages ever

Though canceled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Hatteras Island Meal’s annual raffle has returned with a bang in 2021, featuring some of the biggest and most impressive prize packages to date, thanks to the generosity of local businesses throughout the island.

Hatteras Island Meals (HIM) provides nutritious meals to elderly or homebound clients on Hatteras Island, and the all-volunteer organization, (which began in 1987 as just local folks preparing meals in their own homes for homebound residents), uses the annual raffle as their primary source of fundraising.

“We had to cancel our raffle in 2020, and it has traditionally been our big fundraising event each year,” stated Mike Tidd of Hatteras Island Meals. “We’re out of the gate fast for 2021, and hope to make up for it [and possibly set] a new record.”

The raffle features a total of six prize packages, which range in value from $800 to $1,000, and which include goodies from a long list of local establishments. (Details on each prize package are below.)

Tickets are available at a number of local businesses as well, and the HIM folks have also started to set up temporary sales sites at popular locales, like Connor’s Supermarket or Frisco Rod & Gun.

“Askin’s Creek store, Island Bakery in Avon, Lotsapaws Bakery & Boutique, and Island Convenience in Rodanthe are a few of the places they’re available,” stated Tidd.

“We plan to have volunteers selling tickets at Conner’s from 11-5 on Saturdays, weather permitting, for as long as they’ll have us. We’ll continue to update local businesses with tickets to sell and post them on the HIM Facebook page. We can be contacted through our Facebook page to purchase tickets as well.”

Tickets are available through October 22, with the drawing scheduled to take place at the NCBBA RDT banquet on October 23.

“They’ve graciously welcomed us back, but the banquet remains tentative given the COVID situation,” stated Tidd. “Our drawing will happen regardless.”

Tickets are 1 for $10, or 4 for $35, which means that with the purchase of four tickets, a person’s chances of winning would be 1 in 125 – and that’s assuming that all of the tickets are sold.

“We started with 1,500 tickets, but re-ordered an additional 1,500 for a total of 3,000, which is EXTREMELY optimistic,” stated Tidd. “We’ll sell as many of them as we can.”
