ORV Routes in front of villages reopen on Friday, October 15
Seasonal ORV access for beaches in front of the villages of Hatteras Island will reopen for the off-season on Friday, October 15.
These routes, which run parallel to the villages of Hatteras, Frisco, Avon, and the Tri-villages, open to ORVs annually in the winter months when the visitor population is lower. The routes are closed in the summer season, from April 15 until October 15, when there are more pedestrians on the shoreline.
The majority of ORV ramps on Hatteras, Bodie, and Ocracoke islands have opened for night driving as well over the past few weeks, as sea turtle nesting activity winds down for the 2021 season.
A complete list of ramps open to ORVs, as well as current conditions and recent updates, can be found on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s website at https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/conditions.htm.
It is high time to close driving on the area of beach that borders Avon. There is absolutely no reason for cars other than Park Service and beach patrol to be driving the Avon beach. People wishing to drive the beaches can do so along the National Seashore where permitted. To dive on the Avon beach, civilian vehicles must enter from one of the ramps along the National Seashore and only then drive up or down to the Avon beach. The hazards presented to beach goers by drivers on the Avon beach are numerous and those vehicles add nothing to the economy here and most definitely detract from the natural beauty and ambiance of our bpedestrians, ch. For the safety and well being of Avon beach pedestrian, Avon beach should excluded from driving, year round.
