U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet assists disabled shrimping vessel near Engelhard
At 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 22, the U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet received a phone call about an overdue shrimping vessel, Miss Sophia, out of Engelhard, N.C.
Watch standers began calling local marinas for information on any potential sightings, which all came back negative. Sector North Carolina was finally able to make contact with the captain of the vessel, and verified that Miss Sophia was located approximately four miles away from Engelhard. Following a loss of electronics followed by steering, Miss Sophia drifted and ran aground on Pringleton Shoal.
The station’s CG29219 Response Boat-Small launched from Hatteras Inlet, and after a brief search, was on the scene at 2:15 p.m. After making communication with the captain and his mate, they were brought onboard the CG29219, which then transported them to Engelhard.
The CG29219 made its way back to the station and was moored at 5:38 p.m. No injuries were reported during the incident.
