Cape Hatteras National Seashore temporarily bans beach fires
Cape Hatteras National Seashore has banned beach fires until further notice due to dry conditions and an increased fire risk.
In addition to the Seashore’s beach fire ban, the North Carolina Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide.
Dare County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs also announced on Tuesday, November 30, that a burn ban is in effect for Hatteras Island and other unincorporated areas of Dare County. Unincorporated Dare County does not include areas within a town’s limits. If you are located within one of the six incorporated towns within Dare County, (which includes Duck, Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Manteo and Nags Head), please contact your local municipal officials to determine the latest regulations regarding burning in your area.
According to the Drought Monitor for North Carolina, Dare County is experiencing moderate drought conditions as well as a higher fire danger index rating from the North Carolina Forest Service. In addition, the current and future weather forecast models indicate conditions that are not favorable to open burning.
The National Seashore’s beach fire ban, and the county’s burn ban, will be lifted once conditions improve.
