The day after Thanksgiving is the day that we close the Life-Saving Station for the winter as well as the day that Santa visits the station. This years’ price of admission was a donation to the Elvin Hooper Scholarship Fund. Elvin was a true Hatteras Island Treasure who, among other accomplishments, was a loving husband and father, a teacher, a coach, an author, a building inspector, a musician, a record-holding surf fisherman, a member of the Electric Coop Board, and a founding member of the Beach Apparatus Drill Team.
A few days later, CHA Executive Director John Griffin was able to present a check for $500 to Karla Jarvis, Cape Hatteras Secondary School Guidance Counselor who is overseeing the establishment of the Fund.
