On Sunday, February 6, several juvenile whales were spotted off the coast of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, just south of Cape Point in Buxton.
Relatively close to shore, onlookers could see several sea sprays followed by large black figures emerging for a moment before dipping below the surface of the ocean.
There were several species of birds flying over the whales, which helped the viewers locate where the next whale might breach the water. Per witnesses, a park ranger who had been watching the show as well said that they were humpback whales, who were feeding on a large school of fish.
Humpback whales can be seen during the winter along the Outer Banks when they are migrating to tropical waters for their mating season. Yet another incredible moment captured off the coast of Hatteras Island in the wintertime!
