Dr. Shannon Castillo, Director of Career and Technical Education in Dare County Schools, is pictured holding the first barn quilt produced by the carpentry and art classes at CHSS in their cross-curricular cooperative learning venture dubbed the “Cape Hatteras Secondary School Barn Quilt Project”. The project features miniature versions of the increasingly popular phenomena known as barn quilts that are common in the central and western parts of our state and nation. The wooden “quilts” are constructed, sanded, and primed by the carpentry classes then the design work and painting is completed by the art classes. Pictured with Dr. Castillo are CHSS Carpentry teacher Keith Durham and CHSS Art teacher Justin Paxton.
