Cape Hatteras School Surf Club Holds First Surf Contest
The morning of November 10, 2018 the first surf contest for the Cape Hatteras Secondary School’s surf club was held at the Rodanthe Public Beach Access. Mr Tiderman was in charge of the event. Since starting the surf club Tiderman has wanted to hold a contest for students. The most difficult part about planning a contest is finding a day that suits the majority and leaving wave conditions up to chance as that date is locked in before the forecast is visible. It is unfortunate that every surf club member could not be present but a huge success in showing community support and breaking the ice for future contests.
The contest was held in tricky conditions with 3 ft ENE swell direction and blowing 10-20 mph NW in Rodanthe. That did not stop the surf club contestants from giving it their all while having a great time. While awaiting their heat they enjoyed playing in the shore break. It was amazing to see all of the support and positivity. For every heat, the surfers were scored by three judges on each wave.
The surf club would like to thank everyone involved who supported, and volunteered time and effort to make this event a success for the students. especially the judges – Elwood Westcoat, Fred James, Pat O’Neal, Jason Heilig, Cody Harrell, and Jim Hagy. As well as local businesses for their generous donations to the event – Fox Watersports, Rodanthe Surf Shop/Hatteras Glass Surfboards, REAL Watersports, Hatteras Island Boardsports, and NaturalArt Surfshop.
The students that participated in the contest include; McCoy James, Teigan Auguston, George Powell, Matthew Buettner, Ansley Thompson, Gavin Thompson, Lucas Blankenship, Kai Wescoat, Dylan Watters, Kai Detter, Kai Conner, Dylan Gray, John Contestable, Jasper Morris and Noah Hagy.
