3rd Annual Wind & Waves Sailing Maritime Festival Sponsored by The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau Celebrates The Best of Hatteras Island with a Maritime Market, Surfing, Fishing, and Sailing Clinics This Weekend at Camp Hatteras KOA Resort In Rodanthe. The Annual Wind ‘n Waves Sailing Maritime Festival is a weekend jam packed full of fun celebrating the best of Hatteras Island Wind & Waves. The festival schedule includes clinics and competitions in Surfing, Fishing, Boatbuilding, and Sailing with Live Music, Local Arts & Crafts, and Fresh Seafood Boil on Saturday Night Featuring Live Music by The Simps.
The weekend festivities kick off on Friday, June 7th at 6pm with Pamlico Deli’s BBQ Beach Bonfire and Ghost Crabbing Tournament. Materials for the Phillip’s Boatworks Boat Building Challenge will be available starting Friday at 5pm near the soundside boat ramp. Competitors can begin building anytime and will have three days to work on their boats before the homemade boat races on Sunday Afternoon.
Don’t stay up too late on Friday Night because Saturday’s Morning’s Hukilau Surf Camp starts at 7am for beginner surfers of all ages. The Maritime Market opens at noon featuring local arts & craft vendors offering merchandise and souvenirs ranging from High End Jewelry & Art to Locally Designed T-Shirts & Hats.
Throughout the day on Saturday, a variety of guest speakers including Keeper James, Scott Dawson, Phillips Boatworks, Kinnakeet Oysters, and Chicamacomico Life Saving Station will share presentations on the Maritime History of Hatteras Island and the Future of Maritime Trades and Services in the coming years.
A special presentation by Kinnakeet Oysters on local oyster farming will feature oyster shucking with free samples. Hatteras Sailing’s Youth Sailors will coach a Beginner Learn To Sail Clinic throughout the afternoon. The young sailors will teach sailing concepts in a series of introductory whiteboard lessons open to all festival attendees, and guests can purchase tickets for introductory sails on the Hobie Cats with a Jr Sailing Instructor. Phillips Boatworks will speak on boat building for a green energy future, and how we can prepare our next generation with maritime skills.
A Saturday Evening Concert starts at 6pm sponsored by 1718 Brewing Ocracoke, Outer Banks Boil, and Coastal Beverages features local seafood boil, souvenir pints of beer, and live Music by The Simps. There will also be a raffle for numerous great prizes on Saturday! All proceeds go to the Hatteras Community Sailing Organization, a 501(3)c whose mission is to inspire independence, seamanship, and respect for nature through educational programming for all Hatteras Island Locals and Visitors.
