CHEC has awarded $3,387 in grant funding to local K-12 educators in support of two innovative projects that will positively impact students on Hatteras Island. These grants bring creative projects to life inside classrooms and expand learning opportunities for local students.
Grants are awarded for projects in all subject areas, including music, art, history, reading, science, math, and more.
This year’s Bright Ideas grant winners are:
- Tami Harsh, Cape Hatteras Elementary School, “Lego Education with BricQ Motion Essential” While working with Legos, students will design and build items to solve a variety of challenges, while learning about various standards in math and science. Students will work to determine if design solutions are successful, or if improvisions are needed, bringing this exciting new curriculum to life.
- Ashley Jackson, Cape Hatteras Secondary School, “Hurricane Sensory Garden” This project will create a garden and path on the secondary school campus that will include different features that stimulate students’ senses to calm their nervous system and help with self-regulation. The garden will include water features, wind chimes, colorful plants, art and textures.
Since 1994, North Carolina’s 26 electric cooperatives have collectively awarded nearly $16 million for more than 14,700 projects benefiting 3.65 million students.
