Coast Guard is rescuing sailor missing for 66 days
Late Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard reported in a news release that its crews are conducting a medevac of a man, who has been missing for 66 days and who was located on his disabled sailboat this afternoon off the North Carolina coast.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth received notification from the 1085-foot, German-flagged motor vessel Houston Express at approximately 1:30 p.m., indicating they spotted a man and the vessel about 200 miles east of Cape Hatteras and took him aboard.
A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, N. C., at approximately 3:40 p.m. The helicopter is scheduled to meet the Houston Express, hoist the man, and transport him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk.
The man, 37-year-old Louis Jordan and the sailing vessel Angel, were initially reported missing by his family to the Coast Guard on Jan. 29.
The Coast Guard will conduct a debriefing with Jordan.
