‘To the Point’ radio interviews  focus on veterans during November

“To the Point,” the Radio Hatteras interview show hosted by Island Free Press editor Irene Nolan, will focus on veterans — especially Hatteras Island veterans — during the month of November with interviews on two different island vets groups.

The focus comes as the country gets ready to celebrate Veteran’s Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The first interview, which was aired on Sunday evening, Nov. 1, is with Frank Miller of Hatteras Village. Miller retired from the U.S. Army as a major after a career of 20-plus years and now runs a private consulting company —  in addition to working in the family business, the Hatterasman Drive-In.

He is also the founder of the Hatteras Island Veterans Support Group, which meets monthly at the Drive-In.

In the interview, Miller talks about how an area of the restaurant has been given over to veterans.  It’s called “Veteran’s Hall” and serves as a meeting place, a place to get information, to reach out to others and get support. Outside, the restaurant, there is a memorial to Hatteras veterans, which is a work in progress.

Miller stresses that the Hatteras Island Veterans Support Group is not “a closed organization, by any stretch of the imagination.”  It is open to all veterans, their families and friends, and anyone else interested in veterans’ issues.

The interview with Miller will be rebroadcast on Radio Hatteras on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m.

The Hatteras Island Veterans Support Group will also host a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, at the Veteran’s Memorial at the Hatterasman Drive-In at the corner of Highway 12 and Eagle Pass in Hatteras village. Everyone is invited.

Hatteras Island vets will also be honored on Friday, Nov. 13, at a ceremony at Cape Hatteras Secondary School in Buxton.

Island veterans will be treated to breakfast, prepared by the school’s culinary class, at 8:30 a.m. and will be recognized and honored at an assembly in the school gymnasium at 9:30 a.m.  All island veterans are invited and should call the school if they plan to attend.  Call 252-995-5730 — Gary Kierney at ext. 3008 or Randy Ratliff at ext. 3003.  The public is also invited to attend the assembly.

The second “To the Point” interview scheduled for broadcast on two Sundays, Nov. 15 and 22, at 5 p.m. will be with Kevin McCabe of Buxton, who, along with John McGee of Frisco, founded the Cape Hatteras Wounded Warriors Project.

The groups raises funds and donations to host wounded warriors and their families for vacations on Hatteras Island.

“To the Point” airs on the island’s community radio station, FM 101.5, at 5 p.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month.  It is repeated on the second and fourth Sunday. Those who don’t live on Hatteras can listen to the show on Sundays through live streaming at www.radiohatteras.org.
