Sail Training for local Hatteras Island Youth is back in action as of this past weekend. Twenty Eight (28) young sailors from the ages of 5 – 15 have registered for the 8 week Spring Session that began this past weekend, April 10 with a fun outdoor cookout and sailing adventure at the old Mariners Cove Marina in Avon. The youth are divided up into 4 classes that meet on Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 1 pm and 4 pm.
What’s unique about Hatteras Community Sailing is that it is a full time, year round training program similar to many school sports. The program is designed to have 4 – 8 week sessions so that youth involved in other sports can have the opportunity to participate in at least one of the seasonal sessions, but are not limited to only one session. The Organization is affiliated with US SAILING, the National Governing Organization for Sailing in the USA.
The 2021 Spring Season is exciting because we are introducing larger boats to the program so that older youth and adults can participate and learn more about sailing… maybe even compete in some regular weekly racing events. In addition to the 8 Optimist One Design prams, the group has been fixing up Hobie 18 Catamarans as well as 3 International One Design 420 Sailboats
Several youth are returning from the Organization’s very successful first year in which a Summer, Fall and Winter Session were offered for upward of 50 youth in total. The program seems to be catching on, with several new registrations this year. The weekly classes include lots of fun on the water and classroom instruction in sailing, boating, seamanship, weather, navigation, racing, and lots of sailing adventures to nearby Soundside nooks and crannies.
Summer Session Registration will be opening up online May 1 and the 8 week Summer Session will begin on Saturday June 5. Hatteras Sailing Sessions are kept very low cost with the help of our volunteers and sponsors. For more information on being a business or individual sponsor or volunteer please visit our website!
Hatteras Community Sailing is operating as a Non Profit Community Watersports Educational Organization. It survives and grows with the help of local sponsors, donations and fundraising events as well as memberships fees where the members get discounted course fees and access to the boats during the week.
