Dare County’s schools are topic of radio interview ….WITH AUDIO

Danny Couch of Buxton, who has just completed three years as Hatteras Island’s representative on the Dare County Board of Education, which oversees two of our most valuable resources — teachers and the youngsters who are the island’s future, was the guest on the Radio Hatteras interview show, “To the Point,” on Sunday, Aug. 7.

The program is hosted by Irene Nolan, editor of The Island Free Press, and the topic was Dare County’s schools, especially those on Hatteras Island.

Couch is well known as a Hatteras Island historian.  He’s also a tour bus driver, a Realtor, and an active community member in volunteer organizations, such as the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.  In August 2013, Couch was appointed to fill the unexpired term of school board member Anthony Fletcher, and the next year, he was elected to the position in his own right.

He was planning to run for re-election to the school board when Hatteras Island’s County Commissioner Allen Burrus decided not to seek another term for health reasons. Instead of school board, Danny ran unopposed in the Democratic primary for the Board of Commissioners.  He has also no opposition in the November election and is the presumptive Hatteras Island representative to the new board, which will be sworn in in December.

Danny is married to Sherry Couch, principal of Cape Hatteras Elementary School, and they have three children who attend Dare County schools — Rae, Gideon, and Griffin.

Danny was replaced on the Board of Education in July by Mary Ellon Ballance of Hatteras village, who will my guest on this show later in August.

In this interview, Danny is going to talk with us about the accomplishments of his three years on the board and the challenges he sees for the new board.
