AVON– Curtis Escott Scarborough, 81, died peacefully in his sleep at hisresidence on April 19, 2015. Born in Avon, he was the son of the lateJohn and Annie Scarborough. He is survived by his wife of 63years, Mary Jane Scarborough; daughters, Juanita Scarborough andhusband, Hallas, of Avon, Mabel O’Reilly and significant other, SteveSanford, of Avon, Patricia Scarborough of Avon and Esther Scarboroughof Avon; grandchildren, Hallas Scarborough Jr. and Stephanie of NagsHead, Kimberly Brinson and husband, Rodney, of Buxton and LindseyO’Reilly of Avon; great-grandchildren, Hallas “Tristan” ScarboroughIII, Rodney “Austin” Brinson III, Charlie Brinson, Ashley Brinson andMadison Brinson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Madison andTom Scarborough, and two sisters, Esther Whitlock and Irene Miller.
Curtiswas a lifelong resident of Kinnakeet, who, after serving 20 years withthe United States Coast Guard and having been stationed in numerousplaces, returned home to raise his family. He was best known bymany locals as a talented chef working in the family-owned restaurantfor many years. He enjoyed his retirement years by spending timewith family, cheering on the Atlanta Braves baseball team, and watchingboxing. Curtis was also a veteran of the Vietnam War during his servicewith the U.S. Coast Guard.
A funeral service will beheld on Wednesday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at St. Johns United MethodistChurch in Avon with a reception to immediately follow in the churchfellowship hall. Burial will take place at the family cemetery in Avon.The family will receive friends and relatives for a viewing at thechurch on Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
