MANTEO — Ian Danial Holder, 35, of Manteo, NC died Wednesday, August 16, 2017.
Ian was a kind, gentle soul that spoke volumes with measured and sparsewords. He was a private person that did not want to worry others withhis concerns. He loved art, music, reading, caring for stray animals,cooking, country ham and eastern NC barbeque, traveling, friends andfamily. He grew up in the North Carolina mountains and inRaleigh. In his travels as a young adult, Ian worked and livedall over the country, with the greatest time spent in Alaska. Heloved the rugged natural beauty of Alaska and particularly the NorthernLights. Ian grew to love the ocean and boats of all kinds from summersspent in Ocracoke with his grandparents as a child. He was a veryskilled hard worker, working on commercial ships as a deck hand as wellas performing maintenance on a variety of vessels. More recently, Ianwished to be closer to his family, which brought him back to NorthCarolina to work as a marine welder for the NCDOT Ferry Division.
He is predeceased by his grandparents, Bud and Nellie Holder and hiscousin Christopher Holder. Ian is survived by his mother GaynelleKnight and stepfather Vance, his aunt Sharon (Lin) Shehdan, cousinMeredith Shehdan, uncle Gene Holder, great-uncle Hank Toothman, cousinNadine Overby (Don), Carmane Honeycutt and many other cousins andfriends.
To commemorate Ian’s life, visitation will be held at 1:00 pm and amemorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2017, at the JCRaulston Arboretum Education Center adjacent to NCSU. A privategraveside service afterwards will be held at Hanks Chapel Church inPittsboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ian’s name to Wake CountySPCA, JC Raulston Arboretum or to the Unity Church of Raleighplayground fund.
Ian left this life with an unwavering knowledge that his family loved him deeply and was very proud of him.
