National Park Service Honors Outer Banks Group Volunteers
During National Volunteer Week, April 23-29, the National Park Service celebrates the volunteers that work at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial, and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. This past year, these volunteers donated a total of 17,791 hours to the Outer Banks Group!
Last year, 363 Outer Banks Group volunteers donated numerous hours providing information desk services, supporting natural and cultural resource management, assisting with maintenance projects, and hosting at park campgrounds.
“Our national parks on the Outer Banks include vast stretches of pristine beaches and coastline and they include unique historical landmarks such as the location of mankind’s first successful powered flight and one of this nation’s first European colonies in the New World,” stated Superintendent David Hallac. “While our job as employees is to help manage and protect these American icons, we couldn’t do it without support from you who volunteer your time to help protect them. On behalf of the Outer Banks Group, I thank you for your contributions to our public lands.”
Several local volunteers have received special recognition including: Audrey Conner 3,000 Lifetime Hours Award (Cape Hatteras National Seashore); Fred Hattman 7,500 Lifetime Hours Award (Wright Brothers National Memorial); and Peggy Koenig 1,000 Lifetime Hours Award (Wright Brothers National Memorial).
