Lifeguards Return for the Summer at Three Island Beaches
“We’ve heard loud and clear from the community that this is a service that is important to them, and we want to make sure we have some locations where folks can swim in the ocean, and have some peace of mind that there are lifeguards nearby,” said Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent David Hallac. “So we are proud to have these three lifeguard [stations.]”
“We recommend that swimmers who are not experienced stick to these lifeguarded beaches,” he added. “The ocean can be overwhelming – even for people with experience – and the Outer Banks has a very high energy surf, with rip currents that can provide an additional hazard.”
The lifeguards on duty can answer questions on swimming safety and weather conditions, and visitors can also access information on swimming conditions and weather via the daily rip current forecast at www.weather.gov/beach/mhx. Rip current safety info is also available at www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov.
