Cape Hatteras National Seashore Update for July 12
It has been a busy couple of months at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS.) May and June visitation was outstanding, with some of the highest numbers of visitors recorded at the Seashore in roughly 10 years, and this trend is expected to continue in the months ahead.
In addition, more areas of CHNS were re-opened for summertime visitors in recent days, which includes the following:
The tip of Cape Point remains temporarily closed due to the expanding mixed tern colony in various stages of nesting and chick-rearing. Staff monitor the area daily and will restore access when possible. Based on current activity, the National Park Service estimates access to the tip of Cape Point will be reopened in approximately a month.
The CHNS also notes that visitors and residents can now sign up for ocean safety text messages by texting “Join OBXBeachConditions” to 30890. (If visitors experience issues signing up for the service, it is usually because they included quotation marks when attempting to sign up or they didn’t keep OBXBeachConditions as one word.)
The park will also start publishing an email newsletter starting in early August, with more information to come.
