National Seashore updates for the week of June 2
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) announced several recent updates and news items related to recreational activities and seashore conditions on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
News items and events related to the National Seashore for the week of June 2 include the following:
Seashore Updates
- Following the Leave No Trace Principles, summarized below, Seashore visitors can help protect park resources and other visitors.
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you’ll visit.
- Prepare for extreme weather, hazards and emergencies.
- Schedule your trip to avoid times of high use.
- Dispose of Waste Properly
- Pack it in, pack it out. Pack out all trash, leftover food, etc.
- Utilize toilet facilities whenever possible.
- Leave What You Find
- Preserve the past: examine, photograph, but do not touch cultural or historic structures and artifacts.
- Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.
- Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species.
- Do not build structures, furniture, or dig trenches. Leaving large holes in the beach can potentially cause harm to humans, wildlife and vehicles, so leave only footprints on the beach.
- Respect Wildlife
- Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.
- Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators and other dangers.
- Control pets at all times, or leave them at home.
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors
- Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.
- Let nature’s sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises.
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, a beach apparatus drill, also known as the breeches buoy drill, is performed every Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station in Rodanthe.
- As of this afternoon, staff are protecting over 55 shorebird chicks along the Seashore. Many more nests are expected to hatch in the coming days and weeks. View nesting totals at go.nps.gov/fieldsummary.
- Before you visit the beach, go to www.weather.gov/beach/mhx to view the daily rip current risk level and beach conditions forecast. Visitors can sign up to receive Outer Banks beach safety text messages by texting “OBXBeachConditions” to 77295.
