National Seashore Updates for the Week of May 8
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) announced several recent updates and news items related to recreational activities and seashore conditions on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
News items and events related to the National Seashore for the week of May 8 include the following:
Seashore Updates
- Lifeguard services will be added at the Frisco Beach Access starting this Memorial Day weekend. Lifeguards will be on duty daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through Labor Day.
- On the morning of Monday, May 6, a protection buffer was put in place in the Cape Point area to protect nesting colonial waterbirds (least terns). There are also three piping plover nests and two American oystercatcher nests near Cape Point. Staff will continue to monitor the Cape Point area and will remove the protection buffer as soon as possible.
- ORVs and pedestrians can currently travel 0.64 miles south of ORV Ramp 44.
- There are over 26 out of 29 miles open for ORV use across the Seashore.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Move – Interpretive Program
- Dates: May 3-10, 10:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
- Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center pavilion
- Description: Learn about the monumental move event that happened in 1999 when the entire light station was moved 2,900 feet away from the threat of a changing shoreline.
Shaping the Barrier Islands – Interpretive Program
- Dates: May 3-10, 3:30-3:50 p.m.
- Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center pavilion
- Description: Wars, wind, hurricanes, and ocean currents have all had impacts on the shores of Cape Hatteras. Join us to learn about some of these events and the changes they have made to the island.

- Dates: May 10-Oct 14, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

- Dates: May 10-13 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Description: The base of the Ocracoke Lighthouse will be open for viewing.
Ocracoke Pirates Interpretive Program
- Dates: May 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. & May 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
- Location: Ocracoke Visitor Center
- Description: Learn about Blackbeard and other with a park ranger.
Ocracoke Island: Barrier Island Nature Interpretive Program
- Dates: May 13 from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. & May 16 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Location: Ocracoke Visitor Center
- Description: Join a park ranger for a talk about the wild side of the park.
Ocracoke History Interpretive Program
- Dates: May 14 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. & May 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
- Location: Ocracoke Visitor Center
- Description: Join a park ranger to learn about the island’s rich past.
Ocracoke Island: All About Turtles!
- Date: May 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Location: Ocracoke Visitor Center
- Description: Activities especially for seashore kids and families.
Beach Cleanup Volunteer Events
- Dates: June 22 and September 21 (details to follow)
20th Anniversary of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Move Celebration Event
- Date: July 1, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- Location: Event tent near Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
- Description: The public is invited to a free event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse move. The event will include speeches, a question and answer session, expanded interpretive programming, activities for children, and free lighthouse climbing! See press release for more details.
1st Annual Surf Fishing Heritage Celebration
