National Seashore updates for the week of Oct. 15
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) announced several recent updates and news items related to recreational activities and seashore conditions on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
News items and events related to the National Seashore for the week of October 15 include the following:
Seashore Updates
- The Seashore experienced a 42% increase in recreational visitation last month compared to September 2019.
- The remainder of seasonal off-road vehicle routes reopened this morning. The routes can be accessed via ramps 23, 34, 38, 49, 55, and 68. Go to http://go.nps.gov/beachaccess for updated beach access information.
- Recently, a shipwreck believed to be the George W. Wells was unearthed on Ocracoke Island. Seashore Interpretive Ranger, Dave Kent, traveled to Ocracoke to film a short video about the rediscovered wreck from 1913.
- The Bodie Island Lighthouse was first lit on October 1, 1872. Over the years, the lighthouse was home to 41 lightkeepers and their families who would share the work of maintaining the station.
