New CHNS webpage tracks status of grounded vessels
A Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) webpage was recently launched to track the status and progress of three vessels that have grounded along the seashore in the past several weeks. One vessel was grounded on southern Ocracoke Island on January 25, and two vessels became grounded on Wednesday evening, February 2, near Oregon Inlet.
The webpage, https://www.nps.gov/caha/learn/news/vessel-groundings.htm, provides updates on these current groundings, and will also be used for any future groundings within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
One of the Oregon Inlet vessels – a 32-foot-long vessel named Bite Me – was removed from federal park land at about 2:30 p.m. on February 4. The other Oregon Inlet vessel, Reel Lucky, is waiting to be removed from the edge of off-road vehicle ramp 4, and its removal is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Friday, Feb. 4.
The Ocracoke vessel, Vivens Aqua, was issued a special use permit on Feb. 3 for the boat’s owner and his salvage contractor for removal attempts across the beach and into the Pamlico Sound. Work is expected to start on February 5.
The public can also visit the Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Flickr page to view updated grounding photos.
