Sea turtle release scheduled for Tuesday morning at Coquina Beach on Bodie Island
Two sea turtles will be going home on Tuesday, July 25, after being rehabilitated by the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island’s Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center, and the public is invited to come out and watch the turtles as they head back to the ocean.
A juvenile green sea turtle and a behemoth loggerhead sea turtle will be released from Coquina Beach on Bodie Island, just south of Nags Head, on Tuesday morning.
The Coquina Beach Access, which is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, is located off of N.C. Highway 12, directly across from the access road to the Bodie Island Lighthouse.
The release will start promptly at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and visitors are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes early. A recent public sea turtle release in May 2023, (which included six sea turtles), attracted several hundred visitors to the local shoreline.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) partnered with the aquarium to make the release possible. In case of a weather cancellation, an update will be posted to the aquarium’s Facebook page and other social media sites.
