Tip of Cape Point temporarily closed to ORVs and pedestrians
The tip of Cape Point and the adjacent south-facing shoreline was temporarily closed to ORVs and pedestrians on Friday morning, May 31, due to multiple American oystercatcher chicks in the area, per an update from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
From the north of the tip of Cape Point, the east-facing shoreline is open all the way to 0.40 miles north of Ramp 43.
In 2023, Cape Point was temporarily closed on June 27, which was the latest date that Cape Point had seasonally closed since at least 2008. In 2022, Cape Point closed to ORVs and pedestrians on May 25.
The closure area may change depending on the movement of the chicks, and approximately 80% of the ORV routes on Hatteras, Ocracoke, and Bodie Islands are open to off-road vehicle use.
