UPDATE: Community reaches out to family that lost home
The Hatteras Island Community has spent the weekend reaching out to support a Buxton family that lost its home in a fire on Thursday, June 19.
Courtney and Melissa Whitehead and their three children lost just about everything in the blaze that destroyed their three-story house. All escaped without injury but all of their possessions were destroyed.
Over the weekend, clothes were being collected for the family members and folks were baking cakes, cookies, and pies for a bake sale that was held Sunday morning at Conner’s Supermarket.
“I can’t express how much all your donations mean to my family,” Melissa Whitehead wrote Sunday on a social media site. “We are absolutely overwhelmed with how much support we are receiving. We are good on clothes for now, but thank you!”
Friends and colleagues of the family are still collecting monetary donations for the Whiteheads.
Donations may be made at http://www.gofundme.com/aid248.
Also, Courtney Whitehead is a volunteer firefighter in Buxton and his colleagues at the station are collecting monetary contributions for his family to cover immediate needs and lodging.
Contributions can be sent to the Buxton Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 424, Buxton, NC 27920. Checks should be made out to Courtney and Melissa Whitehead.
